Event Details

T-shirt quilts are a fun and useful way of preserving memories held in special t-shirts that you or a loved one has collected over time! Whether you have a shirt from every race you’ve run the past few years, all of those events you hosted with your sorority in college, your child’s favorite t-shirts from elementary school or just a bunch of vacation t-shirts that you’ve collected over the years- they all make great quilts!

This is a 6 week long course running weekly on Wednesdays from 1/22  and the last class is 2/26 . You will have ample time to work on your quilt during class time, but depending on the size/design of your quilt you may be required to spend some time on the project outside of class. Studio time to rent the machines can be scheduled immediately after class on Wednesdays (in the 1:30-3 time frame) for $8 an hour (this does not include instruction, if you need help on a skill outside of class time you must schedule a private lesson) and you’re always welcome to Open Sew on the first Friday of the month for free!

This class is open to ABSOLUTE beginners! You do not need to know how to sew to join this class. We will give you a crash course to sewing the first class and a t-shirt quilt is a great way to practice sewing because it is all straight lines! If you would like to learn how to use the sewing machines before the first class, feel free to register for a Beginner Workshop or schedule a one hour private lesson with Julia.

Skills covered : Sewing crash course (if you do not know how to sew), supplies needed, designing your quilt, whether or not to use sashing, as well as backing, batting and binding your quilt. **Please do not cut into t-shirts before the start of class!**

Prerequisite: Absolute beginners are welcome, no experience necessary!

Materials Needed:

-16-30 T-shirts (sweatshirts are welcome too!) depending on the size quilt you’d like to create. Please refer to this website for rough size estimates and how many t-shirts you will need. Keep in mind the more shirts, the more work you will have to do!

-A neutral colored spool of thread, can be cotton or all purpose polyester.

-Additional materials we will cover in the first class are: quilt batting (optional), fabric for sashing (optional), fabric for quilt back, fabric for binding (optional), basting spray. Amounts vary for quilt sizes and what finish you choose.

Materials Provided: Lightweight Fusible interfacing for all t-shirts will be provided, but students are also welcome to purchase their own if they’d like. We recommend 906F or 911FF by Pellon or similar.
