We’ve invited our friend and local maker Jenna of the brand brand Jenna Aliyah to the studio to teach us how she makes so many beautiful hand carved block printed textiles. Check out Jenna’s work here!
Block printing has a rich history as the main textile printing technique used in India, and is still used today at by artisan manufacturers.
In this one day workshop you will learn all about the craft of block printing, including: how to transfer artwork to a lino block, what makes a good motif to print, about the tools needed to carve your design, how to ink and print your design. Each student will be supplied with a block to carve their design onto, a yard of natural colored organic cotton and either tea towels or a banadana to print their design. We will be using oil based inks during this workshop, so students will have to stop by back the studio later in the week to pick up their printed fabric in order for it to dry and cure fully (or transport it SUPER CAREFULLY home that day!)
You are welcome to come with ideas for your 4” block but it is not required! We will be spending the beginning of class sketching and getting the creativity flowing. Then we’ll move onto transferring our design, carving and then printing. The yard of fabric will be perfect for a pillow, a tote bag, wall hanging or turned into a few small zip pouches, just like Jenna makes! (maybe check out our schedule and see what classes we’re having after this one, so you can sew it here!)
